There are many books in a book lover’s life that they’ll recommend to you, whether it be a casual comment or seeing a copy in a bookshop and saying ‘oh I enjoyed this, maybe you will too!’. But there are always a few books that any book lover will obsessively recommend to you. It’ll come in the forms of consistent messages, sending links of reviews of said book, and maybe they’ll even buy you a copy because they’re so desperate for you to read it and enjoy it with them.
So, with that said…here’s a list of my top five books that I’ll always obsessively recommend!
SIX OF CROWS – LEIGH BARDUGO
Honestly, did you expect any other book to be at the top of this list? If you’ve been following me here on my blog, or on Twitter or Instagram, you’ll know how much I adore Six of Crows. You’ve got heists, kickass characters, bad boys, cunning schemes, and enough magic to keep you hooked until the very last page.
THE HATE U GIVE – ANGIE THOMAS
This is a book that everyone should read. It’s so important, so gut wrenching, and paints such a sad and relatable picture that it may make you wonder if it’s non-fiction – because the stuff that happens in this book happens constantly in real life. If you haven’t read The Hate U Give yet, please read it immediately. Then watch the movie, which has been so accurately portrayed that my heart ached through every scene.
I WAS BORN FOR THIS – ALICE OSEMAN
I Was Born For This has to be one of the most accurate portrayals of anxiety I’ve ever read, but also a beautiful book about friendship, growing apart, fandom and much more. I adored this book on my first read, and loved it so much more on my second, and has been a constant recommend since it was released.
VICIOUS – V.E. SCHWAB
Oh how I love Vicious. So much. It’s such an intriguing concept – people having near death experiences and waking up with powers that are linked to their cause of death. Victor and Eli are such brilliant main characters who are both flawed in their own way, which sometimes makes it hard to root for them, but that just adds to the absolute joy of the book – rooting for two characters who can both be terrible in their own way (okay, Eli more than Victor).
CARRY ON – RAINBOW ROWELL
Everyone needs a guilty pleasure book, right? For me, that’s Carry On. I love the magic system, I love the characters, I love the tension between Simon and Baz and the constant will-they-won’t-they throughout the book – it’s a fun read! Cheesy, but tons of fun!
What are some books you always recommend, no matter what? I’d love to hear about them!
Loved THUG. Have been meaning to try some Leigh Bardugo for AGES and you’ve got my attention with I Was Born For This too which I wouldn’t normally pick up as I’m not a big contemporary fan!

WOOT WOOT for Six of Crows! Also loved that book to pieces. I’ve seen The Hate U Give pop up like 5 times in the past couple of weeks so I’m moving it up the TBR.
